Bathurst is always going to throw up some interesting scenarios & Friday was no different.
The first practice session of the day was a 45 minute, co-driver only session giving Dean plenty of lap time. Dean spent most of the session at the pointy end of the field sitting in P2. At the end of the session most of the field put on fresh tyres & the lap times dropped quickly. Dean ended the session in P9.
Practice five was a combined session but Dave used the opportunity to get plenty of lap time in before qualifying. Again, Dave spent a large part of the session at the pointy end of the field but towards the end of the session the times dropped & eventually the Bathurst lap record was broken again. Dave finished the session in P7.
Dean: “We certainly didn’t finish the practice sessions where we wanted to be. The pace was very quick in the final minutes but we just need to be in the Top 10 which is where we ended. Our pace didn’t really improve with fresh tyres so we’ve got a bit to work on before qualifying.”
Qualifying was scheduled for Friday afternoon but on the first flying lap, PRA teammate Chaz Mostert had one of the biggest crashes in the history of Bathurst, red flagging the session. The crash caused major damage to the wall as well as the flag marshal box so all on track activity was cancelled for the day.
Dean: “I’ve never seen a crash like that. I just really hope Chaz is ok as well as the marshals. At moments like this, all thoughts of competition and racing goes out the window & you are praying for a positive outcome for everyone involved.”
Qualifying has been rescheduled for Saturday, in between Practice 6 and the Top 10 shootout. Follow Dean on Twitter & Periscope for updates on how they are going.
