The Saturday at Bathurst is usually a pretty relaxed day with just one practice session & the Top 10 shootout. But with the postponement of Qualifying from Friday, it was going to be a busier day than planned.
The final practice session was a combined session & both Dean & Dave got some track time as well as using the session for some crucial driver change practice. They finished the session in P5.
As the middle of the day rolled around, so did the dark clouds and as qualifying got underway, it looked certain that the rain wasn’t going to stay away. The Bottle-O crew made a quick decision to throw their green tyres on straight away to try & get a quick lap. Dave’s lap put him into P8, sending them through to the Top 10 shootout.
The Top 10 shootout wasn’t until late in the afternoon & again, the clouds started looming & the rain started to fall. Dave was the third car to head out on the track & headed out with a plan. He stayed off the kerbs & white lines as much as possible & drove a clean lap. The rain continued to fall making it difficult for the remaining drivers. In the end, no one could match Dave’s time & they took Pole Position.
Dean: “We definitely had a bit of luck today. A few guys missed out on the shootout due to the fact that qualifying was cut pretty short with the rain. In the shootout, the rain came right at the perfect time & we capitalised on it. It was nice to have some luck go our way at the mountain for a change but I’d rather we have more luck tomorrow.”
Sunday sees one warm up session & then the race. Follow Dean on Twitter & Facebook to see how they are going.
