Race 2 was always going to be a tough race for the #14 Taplin Real Estate team. After a penalty in Race 1, they would have to start the race from last.
With the format of the category, Dean would start the race & hand over to Andrew half way through.
Dean had 22 minutes of race time to move up the field before handing the car over. After the first lap he was already up to P22 but a Lap 1 incident brought the first safety car out for the race. Racing finally resumed on Lap 6 but had chewed up a lot of time.
On lap 13, Dean came into the pits to complete his compulsory pit stop and hand the car over to Andrew Taplin. When he entered pit lane he was up to P11.
Andrew rejoined the field in P16. On lap 17, the second safety car was called. They restarted on lap 20 for two more flying laps before the chequered flag. They finished the race in P16.
Dean: “This weekend just hasn’t been going our way. I was looking forward to getting a good 20 minutes of solid racing but that first safety car chewed up so much time & I only got about 8 racing laps. I wanted to hand the car over much further up the field. We’ll just have to work hard in Race 3 & see what we can do.
The positive was that the team fixed the issue with the misfire & I had good pace before the pitstop.”
Race 3 of the Australian GT series is on Sunday morning at 9am.
